Register a motor vehicle

Every motor vehicle kept on a public highway must be registered by its keeper and carry the plates issued.

Steps

1. Check the vehicle needs registering

   Registration has been required since 1920 for every motor vehicle kept on a public highway.

2. Fill in form V-2

   You will need your passport number, the make and model, the year of manufacture and the engine number.

3. Book an inspection

   Bring the vehicle to an office of the Ministry of the Interior. An inspector checks the engine number against the form.

4. Pay for registration and plates

   Pay the registration fee and the fee for the pair of plates at the inspection.

5. Fit the plates

   Fit the plates before the vehicle is next used on a public highway. Vehicles are liable to requisition by the War Ministry.

Fees

Fees are the statutory sums of 1804 revalued by the price index of the Ministry of Finance, which stood at 16,713.61 at the close of 2025 (1804 = 100).

Plates are issued at the inspection.
