Claim a casualty pension

Pensions are paid to the widow, the parents or the dependent children of a casualty whose name appears on a casualty roll published by the War Ministry.

Steps

1. Check you can claim

   You can claim if you are the widow, a parent or a dependent child of a casualty, or the guardian of the children. You cannot claim twice for the same casualty.

2. Find the name on the casualty roll

   The date and cause of the casualty are as published by the War Ministry. Note the record number.

   Search the casualty rolls

3. Fill in form W-7

   Give the name, rank and regiment of the casualty and the roll reference. You must accept the cause as published.

4. Present the claim

   Bring the casualty notification and the register entry of your relation to the casualty to any office of the War Ministry. There is no fee.

5. Receive the award

   The pension is determined in the name of the Minister of War and paid at the rate for the rank under the War Widows Act and the Pensions Act.

Fees

Fees are the statutory sums of 1804 revalued by the price index of the Ministry of Finance, which stood at 16,713.61 at the close of 2025 (1804 = 100).

Paid from the first quarter-day after the date of loss.
